PACS / RIS

Front Office / MRM   Back Office   Other IT Services

PACS / RIS is a system used to automate the workflow of the Radiology department. This is done by integrating RIS (or Radiology Information System) and PACS (Picture Archiving Communication System) data seamlessly into a user based solution for the radiologist and technologist. The Radiology Information System automates the radiology function by providing a single access to patient information and radiology test results. It provides the flexibility in bringing the productivity benefits of paperless workflow to this division. It replaces the multiple log-ins and user interfaces that impede productivity with one, consistent graphical user interface that can be navigated intuitively by even those with rudimentary PC experience. Moreover, it provides advanced security features at the user, application and function levels, including security logs and audit trails.

The Centricity™ RIS also provides managers with powerful new tools to facilitate budgetary planning, cost analysis, revenue generation, productivity reporting and resource utilization. PACS provides the ability to view radiology images directly on the screen eliminating the need for film images. The radiologist or the doctor can view the images in 3 dimensions and can use special features to more thoroughly analyze the images. PACS improves the speed and consistency of image communication within the radiology department and throughout the hospital through the ability to access and send the results electronically to the desired department or doctor. Moreover, it has the capability to consolidate the storage infrastructure and image distribution for both radiology and cardiology.

The Centricity RIS/PACS that is implemented at RHUH integrates both technologies to provide a synchronized database that unifies patient information. It has a single automated workflow and a single user interface that employs wizard protocols and on-line help. It takes only one log in to get the complete picture of the patient. Centricity™ RIS/PACS enables you to complete reports and deliver results to referring physicians with greater speed and flexibility than ever before. For radiologists, Centricity™ RIS/PACS' web-enabled reporting application significantly improves turn-around time providing a secure, high-quality channel for diagnostic results.

Doctors at the hospital can access the results of the tests as soon as they are verified by the doctor and posted on the system. HMIS and Centricity RIS/PACS interface together such that first the HMIS Radiology module is used to enter patient information and register patients, then the patient gets a medical number, and then an appointment can be made by the system’s scheduling function. Automatically the tests information is sent to the Cashier Management module to charge the customer. The system also has an order processing function module that shows all tests, done and not yet done. Once the patient information has been entered in the Radiology module then it is automatically saved in the Centricity RIS/PACS system without having to retype the information. Also it is automatically available on all radiology machines that are connected to both systems. Once the tests are done, the pictures are directly seen on the computer screen whereby the technologist enters the report, a doctor verifies it, and then it can be accessed by doctors through the Medical Record Management module. Then the images are stored also on CDs for archiving purposes. However, they can also be viewed on film when needed by patients or when they should be sent to external doctors, not working for the hospital. The system is properly documented as set by the hospital policies and ISO standards. Moreover, there exists a backup system that stores the entire patient records and other important information to be used in case of system shut down.
